Chocolate. You eat it. You love it. You secretly want to marry
it. But, besides providing you with happy taste buds, it does something so much
better. Or at least, Askinosie Chocolate does.
Chocolate and I go together like this (You can’t see it, but I’m totally crossing my fingers right
now.). So when I saw that Bear Breaks was taking us to Askinosie Chocolate—a place
I had never heard of, but once I had I desperately wanted to go—I knew I had
found the place where dreams were made of.
Askinosie Chocolate doesn’t simply make chocolate. Every
coca bean they receive comes from local-to-the-area cocoa bean farms in
Tanzania, the Philippines, Honduras, and Ecuador. Not only does Askinosie
support family farmers, they also help the community as a whole. Askinosie sells
bags of rice and hot chocolate mix. The proceeds for these two items go directly
to the respective country they were made in: Tanzania and the Philippines. These proceeds help to feed the families
there, keeping young girls off of the streets where they were selling
themselves, and letting kids have new classrooms.
I never realized how influential something as simple as a
piece of candy could be. Like doctors, policemen, Batman, and Superman, this
chocolate saves lives. It’s definitely a case of extreme ethical leadership on
the part of Mr. Askinosie and his crew. So next time you pick up a generic
chocolate bar, remember that you could pick up some locally-made chocolate and
feed a family just like yours. Plus, it’s yummy, too. ;)
